WILL ALSOP, MARCH 19 + 20

“Progress Check” | Alsop And Stormer, London, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Moscow

+ Toronto March 19, Will Alsop Panel Discussion and Reception, To be Determined

March 20, “Progress Check” Lecture at 7:00 pm with a reception to follow

Lawrence Technological University, College of Architecture and Design Auditorium, A-200

21000 West Ten Mile Road, Southfield, 1.800.CALL.LTU

Will Alsop was born in Northampton in 1947. He studied architecture at the Architectural Association in the 1960s and, with fellow student John Lyall, he established Alsop & Lyall in 1981. Jan Stormer joined later, and upon the departure of Lyall, the practice was renamed Alsop & Stormer in 1991. The firm has offices in London, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Moscow. Because of his avant-garde and strikingly different buildings, Will Alsop has always been considered something of a maverick in the British architectural scene. Until recently, nearly all his big commissions were in Europe, with his most famous British effort being the Peckham Library and Media Centre, which won the Stirling Prize in 2000. Alsop has always had more success gaining commissions on mainland Europe than in his native (and perhaps more conservative) homeland

Lectures begin at 6:00 pm and take place in the Genevieve Fisk Loranger Architecture Center in the School of Architecture, unless otherwise noted. The lecture space is located in the Warren Loranger Building on the McNichols Campus at the corner of Livernois and McNichols. Use the Livernois Campus Entrance. Continuing education credits are offered for these events. For more information, please call the UDM School of Architecture at 313.993.1532 or visit our website at www.arch.udmercy.edu.

DCDC Paradise Valley project

UDM's Detroit Collaborative Design Center is developing an urban design plan for the Paradise Valley Cultural and Entertainment District, an area in downtown Detroit centered around Harmonie Park.  Informed by a series of participatory workshops, the design envisions a thriving, small-scaled culture, music, and entertainment district within the larger entertainment district.

The project, to be completed in December, is a collaboration with the Downtown Development Authority, the Planning and Development Department, the City Planning Commission and area stakeholders.  For more information on the project, see The Detroit News article, "Detroit plans for cultural area on roll."
